Currency Information while travelling from or to India

How much money I (Indian Citizen) can carry when I travel to abroad?

Note: When Indian citizen travel to Nepal and Bhutan from India , he/she cannot buy or carry foreign currency (like Dollar, Euro, Pound etc.)

For private visit (like tourism, visiting relatives) – Total value of up to USD 10000 can carry per person (including infant) in a financial year (from 01st April to 31st March)

For Business travel, conference, specialized training, medical treatment- Total value of up to USD 25000 can carry per person (including infant) in a financial year (from 01st April to 31st March)

Important: Out of above mentioned value, USD 3000 equivalent foreign currency notes and coins are allowed to carry. (Only USD 3000 value dollar notes are allowed to carry, rest in the form of forex card /travelers cheque). But when you travel to you can carry up to USD 5000 currency notes and when you travel to Russia and Iran full exchange may be allowed.

How much foreign currency a foreigner (excluding Nepal and Bhutan Citizen) can carry while leaving India 
Unspent foreign currency not exceeding the amount brought by him on his arrival in India provided following conditions;
  • foreign currency notes exceeding US$ 5,000/-/- or its equivalent
  • traveller’s  cheques exceeding US$ 10,000/- /- or its equivalent
  • It should be must be declared to the Customs authorities in Currency Declaration Form at the time of arrival in India.
Indian Currency regulations

Important Note: 

  • no person is allowed to take or send out of India the Indian coins which are covered by the Antique and Art Treasure Act, 1972.
  • a person coming from Nepal or Bhutan to India and/or a person travelling to Nepal or Bhutan from India, is allowed to carry currency notes of Government of India and Reserve Bank of India notes without any value restriction. You cannot carry currency note of RS500 and RS 1000.

How much money a person (Indian or foreigner) can bring to India? 
There is no limit, however a declaration must be given to Customs authorities in Currency deceleration form
  • If value of currency notes exceeds USD 5000/- or its equivalent 
  • If value of travelers cheque exceeds USD 10000/- or its equivalent

How much Indian currency (Rupee Notes) can carry when an Indian citizen travel to abroad
Up to RS 7,500-per person

How much Indian currency (Rupee Notes) can carry when an Indian citizen coming to India
Up to RS 7,500-per person

International Credit Cards: It can be used for making payment towards expenses, while on a visit outside India.

Unspent Foreign Exchange: must be surrendered with in 180 of return travel date and those have purchased and not travelled must be returned with in 180 days of its purchase.
